(Did I mention I was in Cannes?) I like the comic books a lot,but I haven't been a fan of the first two.

The first was weak and thesecond was pretty good, but no more.

With Brett Ratner at the helm, Ithought this would be a train wreck.

But to my surprise, I liked it just asmuch if not more than "X2." The gay subtext was as strong as ever(thanks to the all-too-brief subplot with Angel), it moved along nicely(only 90 minutes) and there were actual deaths (though no one staysdead for long as anyone who stayed to the end found out in a kicker). On the negative side, why does Hollywood always think bad guy rebelsneed to dress like lame punk rockers (or more accurately, look like kidsdressing up as punk rockers for Halloween); it was awfully hard to buyKelsey Grammar as an action hero; and with all the gay subtext itwould be nice if at least one of the X-men could actually be gay. (Ithought for sure at least Magneto could come up with a juicy commentwhen Angel flew by.) But all in all, pretty fun.

And to heck withWolverine -- let's give Ben Foster's Angel a spinoff pronto.POSTED BY MICHAEL IN NEW YORK AT 7:02 PM 0 C O M M E N T S :Post a CommentL I N K S T O T H I S P O S TCreate a LinkHomeSubscribe to: Post Comments (Atom)Next Blog»sal1mineo@hotmail.comSEARCH BLOG FLAG BLOGFOLLOW BLOGP O P S U R F I N G .

C O MS U R F I N G T H E WAV E S O F P O P U L A R C U LT U R EB Y M I C H A E L G I LT Z & F R I E N D SPOPSURFING.COM: "X-Men: The Last Stand" -- The Reviewhttp://popsurfing.blogspot.com/2006/06/x-men-last-stand-review... 1 of 37/29/09 12:30 AMFAV O R I T E L I N K SAmericablogFive O'Clock Lightning baseball blogDeep Pop -- Lori Lakin's BlogThe Back Page -- Jason Page on ESPNRadioCine-Blog -- George Robinson's BlogDocuments On Art & Cinema - DarylChin's BlogBrucie G's Wondrous Blog OfAdventure and Mystery -- BruceGreenspan's BlogB L O G A R C H I V E▼ 2009 (17)▼ July (3)1939 -- The Greatest Year ForMoviesSwimming Bans Those Hi-TechSuits!Best Movies Of The Year -- TheMaster List► June (3)► May (1)► March (2)► February (1)► January (7)► 2008 (86)► 2007 (781)► 2006 (2412)► 2005 (5)C O N T R I B U TO R SMichael in New YorkBiboyAaron POPSURFING.COM: "X-Men: The Last Stand" -- The Reviewhttp://popsurfing.blogspot.com/2006/06/x-men-last-stand-review... 2 of 37/29/09 12:30 AMPOPSURFING.COM: "X-Men: The Last Stand" -- The Reviewhttp://popsurfing.blogspot.com/2006/06/x-men-last-stand-review... 3 of 37/29/09 12:30 AM
